Friday Report - March 11, 2022

This was another busy week at the State House as the Senate spent most of its time on the floor debating a resolution calling for a Convention of the States, and the House spent most of its time in committees trying to move bills to the floor before next week’s budget debate. The House budget debate will begin on Monday, March 14th at 1:00 pm. The User Fee Authorization bill, S. 984, has still not been set for a committee hearing.

Friday Report - March 4, 2022

This was a very busy and productive week at the State House as the Senate began hearing budget requests in Senate Finance subcommittees and the House debated several bills in committees and on the floor. Several bills of note will be discussed below in this week’s Friday Report.

Friday Report - February 25, 2022

This was a very busy and productive week at the State House as the House Ways and Means Committee debated the budget and the Senate debated bills on the floor. SCAC’s Mid-Year Conference and Institute of Government classes were well attended, and your visits and conversations with members of the General Assembly will certainly have an impact on moving bills forward that are important to our counties. Several bills of note will be discussed below in this week’s Friday Report.

 

Friday Report - February 18, 2022

The Senate and the House spent much of the week debating and advancing legislation to appropriate the state’s portion of the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds. These bills and several others will be discussed below in this week’s Friday Report.

This week the Senate finished debating the medical cannabis bill (S.150) while the House continued to move through its calendar. Several bills of interest will be discussed below in this week’s Friday Report.

Friday Report - February 4, 2022

Most of the activity in the General Assembly this week centered around the election of judges. The House Ways and Means subcommittees continued to hear budget requests from state agencies. The Senate spent most of the week debating the medical marijuana bill (S. 150) but failed to take any action before adjourning for the week.

Friday Report - January 21, 2022

The second week of the 2022 Session was abbreviated due to the inclement weather. House Ways and Means subcommittees continued to conduct budget hearings for state agencies and a Senate Finance subcommittee held a hearing to appropriate funds from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) and the Savannah River Settlement. These items along with several bills of interest will be discussed below in this week’s Friday Report.

Friday Report - January 14, 2022

The General Assembly began the 2022 session this week. Because this is the second year of a two-year session, any bills that do not become law this year will have to be filed again in 2023. The House debated a reapportionment bill (S. 865), and the Ways and Means Committee began budget hearings with state and local government entities.

Friday Report - December 10, 2021

Both chambers met this week to take up their respective redistricting bills, H. 4493 and S. 865. In addition, the Senate elected a new President (Senator Thomas Alexander) after the former President (Senator Harvey Peeler) stepped down to become the chairman of the Finance Committee after the death of Senator Hugh Leatherman.
